The evacuation road that has been repaired is in the Kalasan area for the north bound traffic."
Yogyakarta (ANTARA News) - The Yogyakarta Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency said the government will repair the 50-kilometer evacuation road that was damaged by the plying of trucks from a sand mine near Mount Merapi of Yogyakarta.

"The government will repair the evacuation road in Sleman District of the Yogyakarta Province and the Klaten District in Central Java," the chief of Yogyakarta Disaster Mitigation Agency, Gatot Saptadi, said here on Friday.

He added that the repair fund for the damaged road will come from the central government through the National Disaster Mitigation Agency. The government will give Rp125 billion in funds for the repair that will also be used to rebuild some cattle pens.

Gatot said the repair project will use the auction mechanism, thus it will take time to construct the road.

"The evacuation road that has been repaired is in the Kalasan area for the north bound traffic. That is in good condition. However, the road will be damaged if heavy vehicles still ply on it," he said.

Gatot added that the repair of the evacuation barrack, which still lacks facilities such as electricity and water resources, is the responsibility of the Yogyakarta Regional Disaster Mitigation agency.

The Sleman Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency executive chief Julisetiono Dwi Wasito said the length of the evacuation road that will be repaired in his area is ten kilometers.

"We hope the auction for the repair project will be started in mid-May 2014. The roadwork will be focused in Kepuharjo village," he said.

The agency in Sleman had also coordinated with other related institutions, and prepared the evacuation barrack and the emergency scenario if Mount Merapi erupts.

The preparation to mitigate the eruption of Mount Merapi was done by volunteers near the mountain, including from the Jalin Merapi organization in Deles village of the Klaten district.

The coordinator of the organization, Sukiman, said the people in Deles village had built an emergency post to monitor the mountain.

"However, we are concerned that 11 kilometers of the evacuation road from Sidareja village to Klaten is damaged. The residents had agreed to repair the road together in preliminary anticipation of an eruption," he said.
