Stockholm (ANTARA News/Xinhua) - Sweden has been hit unexpectedly by icy weather throughout the country as the month of May starts.

Brief snow struck Stockholm on Friday morning, and many cities endured freezing nights.

Temperature in Vanersborg, a town in the south west of Sweden, even hit minus 3.7 degrees Celsius, the lowest May weather in 115 years.

"This is a real step back for spring," Sofia Soderberg, meteorologist at the SMHI weather agency, told the TT news agency.

In the past two days, temperatures in towns and cities stretching from north down to parts of southern Sweden were below zero.

Temperatures will remain low across the country for the next five days, according to Soderberg.
