Jakarta (ANTARA News) - An earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale hit the northern part of Sumatra at 9.47 hours local time on Saturday, a meteorological office said.

Based on an electronic message of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics office (BMKG) received here on Sunday, the earthquake took place at 1.93 degrees north latitude and 97.87 degrees eastern longitude at a depth of 17 km.

It is located some 1,341 km northwest of Jakarta.
