Wangiwangi, Southeast Sulawesi (ANTARA News) - The Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) is planning to build a botanical garden in Wakatobi district, Southeast Sulawesi Province, stated Wakatobi district head Hugua.

"The Wakatobi district government has asked LIPI to build the botanical garden, and now, LIPI is planning to do so," Hugua noted here on Saturday.

Hugua explained that when LIPI and the Wakatobi district government signed an agreement on research on May 19, 2014, in Bogor, West Java, he proposed that LIPI should build a botanical garden in Wakatobi.

According to him, if the plan materializes, the presence of a botanical garden in Wakatobi will further strengthen the position of the district as an Earth Biodiversity Center in the region of the world coral reefs triangle.

"The Wakatobi district government has set its vision to transform the district into an Earth Biodiversity Center by 2025," Hugua remarked, adding that a great variety of trees will be planted in the Wakatobi botanical garden similar to that in Bogor.
