"We are doing our best to build friendship and cooperation with friendly countries and the international community to safeguard our blossoming democracy," he emphasized here Thursday.
Speaking at a press conference after chairing a limited meeting on political, legal, and security matters, Yudhoyono noted that six days before the ballot day on July 9, the situation throughout the country remains secure.
"I assure the people of Indonesia that with our togetherness, good will, and adhering to the steps of the electoral process, the presidential election will run peacefully and democratically," Yudhoyono remarked.
President Yudhoyono also called on the police and military personnel to work hard in ensuring that the presidential election and succession process of the national leadership will run smoothly and peacefully.
In response to the peoples concerns about a likely chaotic situation and violence in the aftermath of the ballot day as a result of the losing party disputing the election result, he stated that the government will prevent it from happening.
Yudhoyono added that the government will safeguard the democratic process by deploying the police assisted by the military to thwart any acts of violence intended to disrupt the peaceful transition of the national leadership.
The July 9 presidential election will be contested by the Prabowo Subianto-Hatta Rajasa pair and Joko Widodo-Jusuf Kalla duo. The newly elected president and vice president will officially take charge in October.
