Ambon, Maluku (ANTARA News) - At least nine people were killed in a communal clash between the residents of Iha and Luhu villages, West Seram, Maluku Province, on Monday.

"A report received from the West Seram Police said that the clash resulted in the death of five Luhu and four Iha residents," Maluku Polices spokesman Adjunct Senior Commissioner Hassan Mukadar stated here on Monday.

The clash was believed to have been triggered by the death of Juraid Puttuhena, an Iha villager, whose body was found near Luhu village.

"Juraid was not killed in the fight that occurred on Monday, at 5.30 a.m. local time. But, his death was believed to have triggered the communal clash between the inhabitants of the two villages," he pointed out.

The five victims of Luhu village were identified as Ali Silou, Iza Heluth, Jumading Zuneth, Muhammad Tahir Silehu, and Ong Payapo, Mukadar added.

Several people were injured during the clash as the villagers used arrows, guns, and daggers.

Meanwhile, earlier, five people were reportedly killed in a fighting between the Seith and Negeri Lima villages in Ambon, Maluku province.

Police officer Senior Commissioner Bintang Juliana stated that the violent clashes, which erupted on July 31, were triggered by the fatal stabbing of a Seith villager, Benjamin Maju, at Nahai hamlet in Negeri Lima village.
