Jakarta`s Governor Joko Widodo, popularly known as Jokowi, hoped that implementing the parking meter system will prevent illegal parking or on-street parking.
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Provincial Administration of Jakarta has planned to enforce parking meter system to improve its parking service.

"We hope to boost Jakartas parking service. In the future, we will impose official parking system in all regions using parking meters," Jakartas Governor Joko Widodo, popularly known as Jokowi, said here on Tuesday.

The governor hoped that implementing the parking meter system will prevent illegal parking or on-street parking.

"Illegal parking will continue to happen if not prevented. Lack of supervision has led to its continuation," Jokowi pointed out.

Meanwhile, Head of Technical Management Unit (UPT) of Parking of Jakartas Administration Sunardi Sinaga agreed that parking meter system was the most effective way of overcoming illegal parking practices in Jakarta.

"Besides eliminating illegal parking, no parking attendants are required as the parking system will be electronically managed by the parking meter," Sinaga explained.

The vehicles will be charged by the hour for parking. The parking meter system will also help to improve regional income.

"Around Rp200 billion (of on-street parking fees) has been missing from the Jakartas Administration treasury. Too many people are involved in such business," Sinaga remarked.

Meanwhile, the Jakartas authority has managed to gain from parking fees a revenue of Rp26 billion per year.(*)
