Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The pair of elected President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo and Vice President Jusuf Kalla (JK) has brought new hope for national maritime awakening, according to an academician.

"The commitment of the Jokowi-JK pair to include maritime affairs in one of the flagship programs is a new hope for national maritime awakening," Prof. Jamaluddin Jompa, the dean of Hasanuddin Universitys Faculty of Marine Sciences and Fisheries noted here on Wednesday.

Speaking at a discussion on "Challenge to Realize the Vision and Mission of Jokowi-JK," Jamaluddin remarked that Indonesia has huge potential to become a great nation in the realm of maritime affairs.

He pointed out that Indonesia is the center of biodiversity and the country with the largest number of islands. Its fisheries potential is worth 65 million tons per year. The fourth-largest populated country in the world enjoys a strategic geographical location and has abundant energy, mineral, and natural resources.

"But the country faces many obstacles in terms of lack of qualified human resources in maritime affairs, the mastery of science and technology, basic infrastructure, and government priority to utilize those resources to become a great nation," he remarked.
