Government and Industry's Positive Attitude toward Indonesian Automotive Industry

JAKARTA, Sept 18, 2014 - (ANTARA ) - Today, The 22nd Indonesia International Motor Show (IIMS) 2014 is officially launched to greet Indonesian automotive aficionados. Muhammad Lutfi, Coordinating Minister of Trade, Republic of Indonesia, had the honor to officially inaugurate this year's IIMS. The auto show will be held from 18 - 28 September 2014 at Jakarta International Expo (JIExpo), Kemayoran, and occupying an exhibition area of 83,137 square meters or up by 10 percent compared to last year's exhibition.

In his remarks during the opening ceremony, Muhammad Lutfi said that investment in automotive industry is a crucial one since it is able to create added value. He said he has secured the commitment from global automotive players, particularly from Japanese, to invest in Indonesia. "The production capacities of Daihatsu, Toyota, Mitsubishi, and Suzuki in Indonesia in average will be double. Mitsubishi recently announced that it will invest nearly US$1billion in Indonesia," said Muhammad Lutfi.

He is convinced that Indonesia International Motor Show will have key role in international community. He believes that in the next five years, IIMS will be an important forum at the regional level and in the next ten years, IIMS will be an important forum at the international level.

In this occasion, he also reminded the automotive industry to embrace small and medium enterprises, or the automotive supporting industry, as they will play key role in supporting the automotive main industry and spare parts.

Meanwhile, Chairman of GAIKINDO, Sudirman MR, who accompanied Muhammad Lutfi at the opening ceremony, further explained the success of Indonesian automotive industry. Through 2013, vehicle production in Indonesia reached 1,206,543 units and as of August this year, the production has reached 878 thousand units or up by more than 14 percent compared to the same period last year. He predicted that by the end of the year, the production will reach 1.4 million units. The production is recorded from 16 brands operating in Indonesia.

In terms of sales, the industry also shows positive improvements. Sales in the last 7 years showed an average growth of 23.4 percent. As of 2013, vehicles sales were recorded at 1,229,811 units, while sales for this year, up to August, was recorded at 830 thousand units, more than 4.8 percent increase from last year's sales.

The success of Indonesian younger generation in developing the latest automotive technology, which at the same time has motivated the next generation to further develop our automotive industry, is also something to be proud of. The utilization of local components in the country's automotive industry also shows an increasing trend. To date, Indonesian automotive industry is using 85 percent local component. At present, key components in a vehicle such as the body, engine, transmission, steering and braking system are manufactured locally. It is expected that in the near future the utilization of local components will continue to increase.

He added that IIMS 2014, as the biggest auto show in the country, serves several objectives such as to provide information on the country's automotive industry and global automotive industry along with its supporting industry; disseminate the information that Indonesian is a potential market for automotive product for automotive investors, and supported with government policies; provide the means to share the development of the technology and the latest innovation; provide promotional tools for vehicles manufacturers and its supporting industry in order to increase its sales both for the short term and long term; and provide relevant information on the development of the latest technology.

One of IIMS main programs which GAIKINDO emphasizes is the annual conference of The 9th Indonesia International Automotive Conference (IIAC). Slated to take place on 25 September 2014, the conference will discuss the prospect of the country's economy and automotive industry as well as government's policies toward the industry. The conference will be attended by noted international and local speakers. The change of the country's administration also provides new spirit to Indonesian automotive industry players. This year's exhibition and conference is expected to inform international and local community that Indonesia is the potential market for automotive products thus proves the country's capability to stand as tall as other Asian countries. In addition, with suitable support from government policies, Indonesian automotive industry will be more appealing to automotive investors.

IIMS hopes to become the benchmark for the country's automotive industry is catapulted by the positive support from sole agents (APM). This year, 36 brands that are member of GAIKINDO will be participating in the exhibition along with 286 supporting industries. They will demonstrate their achievements in automotive technology and prove that Indonesia is qualified to be one of the leading benchmarks for automotive industry in Asia. From the above 36 brands, 29 are passenger car brands namely Alfa Romeo, Audi, BMW, MINI, Chevrolet, Daihatsu, Datsun, Ford, Jeep, Chrysler, Dodge, FIAT, Jaguar, Land Rover, Mercedes-Benz, Smart, Renault, Hyundai, Honda, KIA, Mazda, Mitsubishi Motors, Nissan, Infiniti, Suzuki, Subaru, Toyota, Tata Motors, VW; and 7 are commercial vehicles namely FAW, Hino, Isuzu, Mitsubishi FUSO, Tata Motors, Toyota Dyna, and UD Trucks.

Press & VIP Day

Besides official opening ceremony, today's exhibition is exclusively open only for Press & VIP Day that offers local and international media and select guests the opportunity to enjoy the vehicles and their latest technology. This is to enable media to acquire exclusive information from each APM. At the same time, respective APM will also hold Press Conference that will take place simultaneously at all halls from 12 PM onwards.

This year's IIMS also secure full support from Pertamina. The same commitment and support toward green technology that is consistently demonstrated by IIMS convinced Pertamina to become the main sponsor of IIMS 2014. As an integral part of the country's automotive industry, Pertamina hopes it will be able to strengthen its relations with consumers through IIMS 2014.

Last year, the total visitor for IIMS 2013 was recorded at 373,661 visitors, increased from the previous year's visitors of 368,790. With various improvements in all aspects of the exhibition along with better facilities to comfort visitors, committee of this year's exhibition is confident that the 11-day exhibition will become magnet to visitors.
