Jayapura, Papua (ANTARA News) - Operations in the Grasberg mine was temporarily halted by PT Freeport Indonesia, following an accident that killed four miners on Saturday at 7.24 am, local time.

According to a statement released to the press in Papua on Saturday --which Antara had access to-- Freeport reported the incident to the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry and ceased operations at the mining site.

The accident occurred when a light operational vehicle with eight passengers on board and the driver collided with a haul truck on the freeway leading to Grasberg mines.

Freeport claimed that even though the rescue team in Grasberg had responded promptly after the incident, four people were found dead at the accident site and five others are being treated at Tembagapura Hospital.

PT Freeport Indonesia offered their condolences to the families of the victims.
