Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Jakarta police have held 20 members of the Islam Defenders Front (FPI) for their alleged involvement in riots and vandalism during rallies at City Hall and the Jakarta Legislative Assembly Building here on Friday.

"Until now, 20 FPI members have been arrested and are being questioned at the Jakarta Metropolitan Police headquarters," Jakarta Metropolitan police spokesman Senior Commissioner Rikwanto said.

He said the police believed the FPI members deliberately tried to create disruptions, as they were found carrying knives and other sharp weapons.

The police have confiscated two cars that were used in the demonstration.

Rikwanto said the demonstrators were demanding the appointment of deputy governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama as the replacement for Jakarta governor Joko Widodo, who is the President-elect.

As per law, Basuki will automatically become the governor when Joko Widodo takes over the presidency of Indonesia.

Eleven police officers were hurt in the incident, Rikwanto said.

A member of the Jakarta legislative assembly, Abah Guntur from the Peoples Conscience Party, said he will lodge a lawsuit against the FPI as his Vellfire car was damaged in the demonstration.

"This cannot be allowed to continue. They rallied, attacked and caused injuries. They brought sticks, swords, rocks and firecrackers to attack the DPRD building," he stated.

Guntur said the police must arrest the coordinator of the demonstration, who is also the chief of FPI Jakarta.
