Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Corruption Eradication Commission on Monday arrested Central Tapanuli regent Bonaran Situmeang after being grilled for seven hours .

Bonaran, a former lawyer, was charged with bribing former chief justice Akil Mochtar to fix the result of disputed election for new regent of Central Tapanuli.

Bonaran finally won the dispute and was named regent of that district.

In court investigation Akil, who is already convicted, was said to receive Rp1.8 billion from Bonaran.

Akil was convicted for life imprisonment for receiving bribes including from Bonaran.

Bonaran, however, protested and strongly denied the charge.

"This is cruel. Why am I arrested. I was not even asked in what way I am linked to Akil," he said.

He said he did not know Akil and denied having to bribe him.

KPK named Bonaran a suspect in August.

Bonaran is facing a 15-year jail term with a fine of Rp750 million if found guilty. ***1*** (AS/H-YH)
