Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesian Police (Polri) Chief General Sutarman said 16 police officers were killed while guarding the legislative and presidential elections earlier this year.

"According to an evaluation of election implementation, 16 members died," the general stated while wrapping up the election security evaluation here on Wednesday.

While some died guarding election logistics, others were killed in a boat accident in Kalimantan.

Sutarman announced that he decorated the fallen soldiers with higher ranks to honor their services to the country.

"Thats the sacrifice of the sons for their nations progress. Let this go down in history so the world can learn from Indonesia," he added.

The legislative elections held on April 9, 2014, and the presidential election on July 9, 2014, are considered as learning processes for Indonesias democracy.
