Kupang, E Nusa Tenggara (ANTARA News) - Security personnel will soon be deployed on Adonara Island in the eastern Indonesian province of East Nusa Tenggara after a clash erupted between two groups of villagers there, noted an official.

The decision to deploy a company of police officers and a company of military personnel was taken during a meeting held between Commander of the Larantuka district military command Lt. Col. Kusni and the representative of the East Flores district police Comsr. Hito Herman, East Flores District Head Yoseph Lagadoni stated on Thursday.

On Wednesday, fresh violence broke out among the residents of Lewobunga, Lewonara, and Bele villages on the island after Lewobunga residents collected cashew fruits from a disputed area.

This act infuriated the residents of Lewonara and Bele villages, thereby leading to the clash.

A similar clash was reported on the island on October 1, 2012. The tensions eased late November 2013 after the local authorities cordoned off the disputed area.

"We have just held a meeting during which, we decided to send security personnel from the district police and military command to Adonara this evening to assist the police and military personnel there in securing the island," he stated.

They would depart for the island only this evening aboard a motor vessel since they had to make preparations, he added.(*)
