Purwokerto, Central Java (ANTARA News) - A political observer from state General Soedirman University in Purwokerto, Central Java, has called on the people to give President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) time to select his ministers.

"Let us give Jokowi time to carefully select his cabinet members so that he does not choose unprofessional, unclean figures," Ahmad Sabiq, the observer, said here on Thursday.

He urged the people to appreciate President Jokowi for involving the Corruption Eradication Commission and the Financial Transactions and Analysis Reporting Center in scrutinizing the financial background of his candidates.

Sabiq praised the move and called it a smart decision by Jokowi to keep his cabinet free of corruption and as a way to reject candidates who has the potential to be implicated in corruption cases.

Responding to a question regarding delay in the announcement of cabinet, he pointed out it was not impossible considering the tug-of-war between parties in the Great Indonesia coalition supporting Jokowi and between Jokowi and Jusuf Kalla.

"The signs of pressure became evident when Jokowi broke his promise of a slim cabinet as well as his decision to expand the coalition by providing positions to a party that could stay the course," the professor of social and economic sciences said.

He stressed that the people must understand the difficult situation Jokowi was facing.

According to Sabiq, Jokowi also had to consult the House of Representatives regarding his plan to change the nomenclature of ministries and this too added to the delay.

He remarked that Jokowi has not violated any term of schedule, as he has been given 14 days since his inauguration on Monday to form the cabinet.
