Jakarta (ANTARA News) - PT Freeport Indonesia has named former deputy chief of the State Intelligence Agency (BIN) Maroef Sjamsuddin as its new president director.

According to a press statement received here on Wednesday, Maroef who joined the mining company after completing his long career in the military will replace Rozik B Soetjipto, who will soon retire.

"He is a retired Air Force Rear Admiral," Freeport spokesman Daisy Primayanti said in the statement.

Maroef, who was deputy chief of BIN from 2011 to 2014, has obtained a Masters in Business Administration from the Jakarta Institute of Management Studies.

Rozik expressed hope that Maroef will lead Freeport to perform better in the future.

Meanwhile, Maroef noted that cooperation between all stakeholders will be in line with the implementation of a long-term investment strategy in Papua.

"This is the most interesting moment for Freeport with regard to its plan to develop a new mine in Papua that will benefit its employees, local people, the government, and all stakeholders for the decades to come," he added.

Freeport has applied for an extension of its contract, which will end in 2021, until 2041.

But, in line with Law Number 4 of 2014 on mineral and coal mining, application for a contract extension can be submitted only two years before its expiration.

PT Freeports current contract will expire in 2021 and the company can submit the application only in 2019.(*)
