Yogyakarta (ANTARA News) - Thousands of residents of Yogyakarta, Central Java, gathered at the Yogyakarta Palace on Saturday afternoon for a grand meeting with their king, Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X, for the launch of a logo for their old city.

During the meeting, which was a rare one between the people and their king, Sultan Hamengku Buwono X described the philosophical meaning of the citys new logo, "Jogja Gumregah" (Jogja Awakened).

Thousands of people from five districts in the special region united in cultural marches through the citys main avenue, Malioboro, presenting various cultural exhibits.

Culturalist Butet Kertaradjasa said the event revealed Yogyakartas extraordinary and strong cultural roots.

Such an event that unites the people and their king cannot be found in other regions, he noted.

"Imagine, just a logo could bring people, including heads of government services and students, together for a celebration. This will not happen in other regions in Indonesia," he added.

After the celebration, which also marked the 27th anniversary of the coronation of Sultan Hamengku Buwono X as the chief of the Javanese traditional kingdom, all attendees were served traditional rice cones and other traditional dishes. (*)
