"As a country with a population of more than 240 million and different ethnic groups, cultures and religions, Indonesia is always aware of the importance of promoting tolerance and respect for human rights," Director of Human Rights and Humanity of the Foreign Affairs Ministry Dicky Komar said in a press statement released on Saturday.
He made the statement while addressing the 28th Regular Session of the UN Human Rights Council at the UN Office in Geneva on March 5.
According to Komar, the re-election of Indonesia as a member of the UN Human Rights Council for the 2015-2017 term not only confirmed the countrys strong commitment to promoting the protection of human rights but also indicated the international communitys high confidence in the countrys commitment to the protection of human rights.
At the meeting, the Indonesian delegation presented the Joko Widodo governments policies for promoting human rights.
The policies included the countrys commitment to protect the human rights of Indonesian citizens, particularly migrant workers, settle the pending cases of human rights violations, and ensure ownership rights to properties, including land titles.
The Indonesian delegation also spoke of the latest steps taken by the government. They included the revision of a law connected to the truth and reconciliation commission and the ratification of the UN convention on the protection of citizens from forced disappearance.
