The gun exploded accidentally and its bullet pierced through the wall of Lion Air`s ticket counter, which is made of plywood.
Jayapura, Papua (ANTARA News) - Two passengers of Sriwijaya Air were shot at Mopah Airport, Merauke District, Papua Province, on Monday, and one of the victims reportedly died in the incident.

The incident took place when Praka Dedy, a military officer of Battalion 756 Yalet Merauke, attempted to empty a firearm belonging to Head of Bekang Kodam XVII Cendrawasih Lieutenant Colonel CPA Joko Pitoyo at Mopah Airport, Merauke.

However, the gun exploded and its bullet pierced through the wall of Lion Airs ticket counter, which is made of plywood.

The piercing bullet then wounded Sugiono (32) and his child Novan (6) who were standing near the ticket counter.

Novan, who was being carried by his father, died before receiving medical treatment from the Merauke local hospital.

The bullet, piercing through Sugionos left back and chest, penetrated Novans stomach.

Danrem (Military Commander) of Merauke Brig. Gen. Supartodi telephonically informed ANTARA that the Military Police are investigating the incident.

"Although it was an accident, the two members Praka Dedy and Lieutenant Colonel CPA Joko Pitoyo should undergo the investigation process (investigated)," Supartodi added.(*)
