The pilkada will be organized in 269 regions, including nine provinces, 224 districts and 36 cities, on December 9.
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Vice President M Jusuf Kalla gave directives to police officers on security measures for simultaneous regional head election (Pilkada).

The vice president spoke in a closed-door roll call here, Wednesday.

Kalla was present on behalf of President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) who was earlier scheduled to speak before the police officers.

Also present on the occasion were National Police Chief Badrodin Haiti, Deputy Police Chief Budi Gunawan, Finance Minister Bambang Brodjonegoro, Home Affairs Minister Tjahjo Kumolo, and Chairman of the Election Supervisory Board (Bawaslu) Muhammad.

Earlier, General Badrodin Haiti instructed his officers to optimally secure the simultaneous regional head elections (pilkada) that will be held late this year.

"Every officer must give it their all and seriously secure the elections, to ensure the smooth implementation of the democratic process," the general said on Tuesday.

The police chief believes that there is potential for the simultaneous elections being organized across the country to trigger conflicts.

"The simultaneous elections face the high risk (of triggering conflicts). Therefore, I gave the order as a preventive measure. It is important because the integrity of the police force is at stake. The capability of the National Police in guarding the pilkada will be questioned," he remarked.

The National Police is organizing a roll call for three days, from August 11 to 14, with regard to preparations being made to implement security measures during the simultaneous regional head elections.

The pilkada will be organized in 269 regions, including nine provinces, 224 districts and 36 cities, on December 9.

Till August 3, the General Elections Commission, as the executor of the elections, registered 838 pairs of candidates contesting for the regional head elections. (*)
