"We should build values in the community to make sure that people comply with the law," Jokowi emphasized.
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The law enforcement paradigm should be changed by relying on prevention instead of repression, President Joko Widodo said.

"Prevention (of untoward acts) should be ensured by encouraging understanding of and adherence to norms or values in the society," President Joko Widodo stated in a special interview with ANTARA News Agency, the state-owned television station (TVRI), and the state-owned radio station (RRI) here on Wednesday.

The president added that the government should help develop values in the society so that people obey the law.

In addition, peoples understanding of the law should be increased, and the opinion that law enforcement is more than merely arresting offenders should be promoted as much as possible, he noted.

"We should build values in the community to make sure that people comply with the law," Jokowi emphasized.

In a modern society, legal rules should be framed to establish a system of prevention.

"So many governors, mayors, district heads, and officials have been arrested so far," he pointed out.

"The problem of identifying ways to build a law-abiding society should be addressed," the head of state remarked.

It is important to develop a culture of abiding by the law in the society, apart from imprisoning people, Jokowi admitted.(*)
