Jakarta,  (ANTARA News) - Indonesia abstained in a vote to adopt a resolution at the emergency meeting of the United Nations General Assembly on Israeli agression in Gaza Strip. "Indonesia has chosen to abstain because it thinks the resolution is not strong enough to condemn Israel on its attacks on Gaza," Indonesian foreign ministry spokesman Teuku Faizasyah said here on Saturday. The country`s stance may be surprising as it was the one that had called for the meeting long before the UN Security Council issued Resolution 1860 last week. Meanwhile in his speech at the meeting Indonesian ambassador to the UN Marty Natalegawa said that as one of Palestina`s supporters Indonesia deeply regretted that it could not join other UN members to create a concensus in the meeting. "Our delegation will have a big problem explaining to the Indonesian people about how we as members of the General Assembly not the Security Council totalling up to 190 were unable to explicitly call on Israel to stop its violence and withdraw from Gaza Strip now," Marty said. According to Marty following a change in the draft resolution, or the third paragraph to be exact, the UN General Assembly showed that it even could not identify the main suspect behind the humanitarian crisis so far, namely Israel. "Certainly, every person`s life is precious. I did not say that one life is more worthy than another. We condemned. We were concerned each time we saw a civilian die, be it Israeli or Palestinian," he said. Mary however said that now was the right time for the UN General Assembly to take a firm and clear stance on the problem. "We said we could not support the resolution not because we did not support Palestine. We, on the contrary, 110 percent support Palestine and therefore we felt the resolution was not strong enough in condemning Israel and requiring it to immediately withdraw from the territories it has occupied in Palestine," he said. Marty said by abstaining, Indonesia wanted to show its total solidarity with the suffering Palestinians. In the unbinding resolution issued this weekend the UN General Assembly almost unanimously voted to call for "full respect" for UN Resolution 1860 that called for a durable cease-fire and withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip. The resolution was adopted after hours of debate with 142 votes supporting it, six rejecting and the rest abstaining. The UN Resolution 1860 also called against hindering supplies and distribution of humanitarian aid including food, fuel oil and medicines across Gaza Strip. Some 1,105 Palestinians have been killed in the past three weeks of war while 15,000 others were injured, according to the Palestinian health ministry in Gaza. Palestinian officials meanwhile estimated the damage incurred at around US$1.4 billion. The Palestine Central Bureau of Statistics said around 26,000 Gazans cannot live in their houses and for the time being were accomodated at emergency shelters. It also estimated around 20,000 buildings had been damaged including 4,000 buildings that had been totally estroyed as a result of Israeli air, ground and sea attacks. Surveyors reported to the bureau public buildings that were damaged include 18 schools and universities, roads, bridges, electricity and water network.(*)
